Cleaning Method
Choosing the correct cleaning method is based on personal preference with regards to noise, price, longevity, and the finish that can be accomplished on the brass case. The pros and cons are as follows:
Vibratory Tumbler: PRO- Less expensive, CON- Noisy and requires more time investment during the cleaning process.
Sonic Cleaner: PRO- Very quiet and time effective, CON- Leaves a dull finish on the brass
Wet Rotary Tumbler: PRO- Very fast, effective and leaves the brass extremely clean, CON- Expensive
Cleaning Media
The cleaning media that you will use is dependant on the cleaning method used and is as follows:
Vibratory Tumbler: Corncob or Walnut media (treated includes an oil penetrative solution that may help the cases to become less dull when cleaned)
Sonic Cleaner: Case cleaning solution (dilutes with water)
Wet Rotary Tumbler: Stainless steel pins (mixed with water or case cleaning solution)
Powder Measure
A powder measure is not nescessary however it does make the reloading process much simpler, and less time consuming. This item is used to fill the powder scales to a required charge, and then topped up using the powder dribbler.
A description of the Hornady L-N-L Powder Measure can be found below:
'The Lock-N-Load® powder measure offers the most flexible operation and the widest range of any powder measure. It ranges from .5 - 265 grains of powder (special metering inserts and rotor required). Metering inserts can be changed with the push of a button. Comes with standard rotor and metering insert.
Features
LARGEST CHARGE RANGE IN THE INDUSTRY
Go from .5 grain to 265 grains by simply changing rotor and inserts. Use one Lock-N-Load® Powder Measure for reloading everything from small pistol cartridges to large magnum rifle cartridges.
PUSH BUTTON RELEASE FUNCTION
To change metering inserts, just push the Lock-N-Load® insert release button and insert another metering insert. Simply verify the new charge and you're reloading again right away. Inserts can be swapped in seconds. Go from reloading 30-06 to 45 Auto in no time. Keep the preset inserts with your die sets.
PRECISION TOLERANCE
With only .002" clearance between the drum and rotor, it's the tightest in the industry for a standard measure. This tight tolerance helps eliminate powder binding between the frame and drum, delivering smooth function with all types of propellant–extruded or ball.
MULTIPLE MOUNTING METHODS
Mount to your bench using a standard mounting bracket and lock ring, or use our Lock-N-Load® bushings to mount this versatile measure on the Fast Load Powder Measure Stand or on the Lock-N-Load® AP™ with case activated powder drop for automatic powder measuring during reloading.
ADJUSTABLE TENSION
The O-ring on the metering insert adjustment lets you put a slight amount of tension on the metering unit to make fine, incremental adjustments. Once you've set your charge, tighten the lock ring to secure the setting.
SMALL & LARGER DROP TUBES
These tubes speed up powder flow. Two drop tubes are provided standard for .204 to 45 calibRE loads. Use the largest drop tube that fits the case mouth. An optional extended drop tube is also available.'
Scales
Possibly the most important part of reloading are the powder scales as this is what allows for accuracy when weighing the powder. Three main types of scales exist:
1. Digital Scales (usual scale with a digital readout)
2. Balance Beam Scales (manual method and usually the most accurate)
3. Digital Powder Systems (This system is pre-programmed for charge weight and will dispense the required amount of powder and weigh it at the same time)
Powder Dribbler / Trickler
A powder dribbler is not nescessary in the reloading process however it does make the process much easier, faster, and more accurate.
A sample description of a powder trickler is shown below:
'The Hornady Powder Trickler is ideal for getting your loads exactly the same every time, for increase accuracy. You can easily drop that last few tenths of a grain of powder into a dropped charge for the ultimate uniformity in your powder charges.'
Kinetic Hammer
A kinetic/inertia hammer becomes nescessary if a mistake has been made with either the primer seating, powder charge, or bullet seating process and you are required to dismantle the loaded round. A description from the Lyman Magnum Inertia Hammer can be found below:
'The Lyman Magnum Impact Bullet Puller is designed to safely disassemble a loaded round in seconds with out damage to the bullet or brass case. Just smack the head on a hard surface until the bullet comes apart from the brass. The head design has been newly engineered to allow the puller to be used on a full range of calibres from the small 5.7x28mm FN to the largest magnum case. The "full size" ergonomic molded handle with rubber insert will provide a comfortable secure grip so the tool wont slip while being used.
Technical Information
Type: Inertia Impact Bullet Puller
Function: Separate bullet and powder from a loaded round
Material: Aluminium shaft, Shatter proof plastic head
Notes:
- Works great with cast bullets
- Works on small calibres like the 5.7x28mm FN to the largest magnum case'
Loading Tray / Block
A loading block is used to sit the brass cases in whilst loading. This makes the process easier and less fiddly when it comes to charging the case with powder and preparing to seat the bullet. The case loading block stops accidental spills from occuring. Most loading blocks hold 50 rounds and the only noticable difference is the calibre that they are capable of holding. A description of the Lyman loading block can be found below:
'The Lyman Universal Reloading Tray is an essential accessory for organization and speed during the reloading process. This twin loading block holds 50 rifle or pistol cases for organized reloading sequence.
Technical Information
Material: Heavy duty plastic
Notes: Double-sided
Fits: 22 ACP through 45 Calibre'
Reloading Manual
A loading manual must be carefully selected based on the calibre and the powder that you require to use.
